The Farming Way

Farm Animal Resource Management offers four special visits that feature demonstrations and hands on learning about the various products that we obtain from a selection of farm animals. We look at the contribution these animals make to a farmer's livelihood and examine the importance of these products to you as the consumer.

Wonderful Wool

This "Farm to You" visit features a mobile shearing demonstration where we bring sheep to your facility and during a comprehensive lesson and hands-on display, cover such things as the history and development of the wool industry over the last 100 years, the qualities and value of wool as a natural fibre, and the intricacies of shearing and fleece removal from a live animal. This visit compliments other student activities dealing with wool and can include spinning and weaving in conjunction with teacher's requirements.

Marvellous Milk

This "Farm to You" visit brings a cow or even a dairy goat into your school environment to show you how milking is done and prove that there is more to milk than what is stored in cartons in the fridge. Students get a chance to try their hand at milking and there is the opportunity to learn about the importance of dairy products in our everyday lives. Using a hand separator to gather cream, using a churn to make butter as they did in the old days, these are features of this very popular program.

Exciting Eggs

This "Farm to You" visit introduces students to the wonders of eggs hatching and seeing those fluffy little chickens take their first peck. We have incubators that are available for use in the classroom and children and students can monitor the progress of "their" collection of eggs over that 3 week period between egg laying and hatching. The program is completed with a special visit that brings a full range of waterfowl and poultry into the classroom for hands-on learning and an appreciation of the wide variety of breeds available today. F.a.r.m has prize-winning examples of many of these breeds and direct links to breeders of some of the rarer poultry strains.

Fabulous Fibres

This "Farm to You" visit includes a shearing demonstration, but goes on to show the different types of fibres that come from other animals and how these fibres are used today. Mohair, alpaca fleece, carpet wool, superfine wool - the program allows children and students to explore the wonders on natural fibres.

Breed Specific or Special Visits

These visits and programs are planned with teachers and provide specific resources related to the current topic being covered by students. F.a.r.m's network of contacts amongst local farmers and commercial operators means we can offer teachers and schools a unique range of animals for study and appraisal. Would you like a farmer to come and address your class, do you need a beef cow and/or a dairy cow, would you like a working sheep dog demonstration? Contact us and discuss your requirements and how we can help by providing the necessary resources.

Bright idea! If you are a small organisation please consider joining another similar group or facility in booking your visit so that costs can be shared and the more appropriate "Farming Way" program can be offered. If you are a small pre-school, contact the local primary school and invite kindergarten and the junior classes to attend, if you are close to other centres organise a "mini" excursion to your centre while the farm animals are on display.

Bright idea! Check out f.a.r.m.facts for project material, resource links and industry information. Go to f.a.r.m. news for the latest newsletter and details of any exciting happenings at f.a.r.m. and be sure to visit f.a.r.m. kids page for activity sheets, pictures and posters.
